“An early settler in this part of the valley was Judge Jacob Weaver, who ran a country store and kept his accounts with chalk on a board, using his own private code of bookkeeping symbols. When a Mr. Harter, a neighboring farmer, come in once to settle his account, he protested against being charged for a cheese, since, like most Herkimer County farmers, he sold cheese in large quantities. But the Judge obstinately pointed to the irregular circle, representing a cheese, entered against the farmer’s name. Convinced by the latter’s reasoning, the Judge was perplexed for a while; but his face soon lighted up and he exclaimed, ‘I’ve got it. It wasn’t a cheese, it was a grindstone; I forgot to put the hole in it.’”
